Former Managing Director of the ABC Brian Johns will discuss The Future of Public Broadcasting at a University of Queensland free public lecture on March 29.
The lecture is the first in the 2001 program of public lectures by UQ's Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies. It will be in the Mayne Hall foyer, St Lucia at 5.30pm.
Professor Johns, who is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Media and Journalism, QUT, was the immediate predecessor to Jonathan Shier as Managing Director of the ABC.
"Given the controversies that have surrounded Shier, and the pressure faced by public broadcasters around the world, Brian Johns' opinions on the future of public broadcasting will be well worth hearing," said Centre Director Professor Graeme Turner.
"Brian Johns has been a champion of Australian content throughout his career (with the ABC, the SBS and Penguin Books) and a sturdy defender of the values of public broadcasting in Australia, as well as an active participant in the battle for recognition for such principles from successive federal governments.
"The Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies is delighted to welcome Brian Johns to the UQ campus, and invites staff, students, and members of the community to hear him speak on this important issue."
Professor Turner said the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies' 2001 lecture program series aimed to promote the research culture of the arts and humanities, in addition to showcasing the diversity of research currently being undertaken within the fields of critical and cultural studies.
The free public lecture, which will be chaired by Professor Turner, has been supported by The University of Queensland Alumni Association.
