Queensland's Chief Justice the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC will be guest speaker at a March 25 service to mark the commencement of The University of Queensland academic year.

Chief Justice de Jersey will discuss aspects of the Centenary of Federation at the service organised by University Chaplains in Mayne Hall, St Lucia at 7.30pm.

A University of Queensland graduate, Chief Justice de Jersey was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court in 1985 and Chief Justice of Queensland in 1998.

He has been the Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane since 1991; member of the Chapter of St John's Cathedral since 1989; and a member of the Council of the Anglican Church Grammar School 1990-1997.

Chief Justice de Jersey's other roles include serving as president of the Australian Cancer Society; trustee of the National Breast Cancer Foundation; Chairman of the Queensland Cancer Fund and member of the Queensland Anti-Cancer Council.

A member of the Centenary of Federation Committee (Queensland) since 1998, he chaired the Queensland Constitutional Convention in June 1999.

Dr Richard Swann of the UQ School of Music will be director of music for the service, which will feature choirs from Bremer State High School, Brisbane Boys' College, Brisbane Boys' Grammar School, Brisbane Girls' Grammar School, St Peter's Lutheran College, The University of Queensland Chorale and Concentus and The University of Queensland Brass Ensemble.
