An international conference in Brisbane this week will be examining critical issues relating to investment in research and development.

With research funding issues already high on the national agenda, the 2000 Australasian Research Management Conference has attracted strong interest amongst universities, industry and government.

The theme of this year's conference is Research as Investment: Building on Ideas and keynote speakers include;

- Professor Robin Batterham, Australian Chief Scientist
- Professor Vicki Sara, Chair of the Australian Research Council
- Professor John Funder, Director of the Baker Medical Research Institute
- Richard Tomlin, Director of International Business Development, Community of Science Inc, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
- Professor Bill Wakeham, Deputy Rector of the Imperial College, London
- Dr Hugh Bradlow, Chief Technology Officer, Telstra
- Dr Carrie Hillyard, Partner, CM Capital Investments
- Professor Geoff Vaughan, Chair of the Cooperative Research Centres Committee
- Professor Ian Chubb, Chair of the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee

Conference organising committee member Jan Massey said the conference will be examining, amongst other things, issues relating to intellectual property, venture capital, the changing public funding environment, strategic links with industry and research collaboration strategies.

"This conference is being held at critical time when Australia is in the midst of an important debate over how to further support and develop its research base," Ms Massey said.

The conference will be held from November 22 to 24 at Brisbane's Hilton Hotel.

It is being organised jointly by the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, Griffith University and the University of Southern Queensland assisted by James Cook and Central Queensland Universities on behalf of the Australasian Research Management Society.
