The University of Queensland is offering a Bachelor of Business Management degree, Bachelor of Business (Communication) and Bachelor of Electronic Commerce for students who aspire to be the business leaders and managers of the future.
Head of the UQ Business School Professor Ian Zimmer said the programs offered students an opportunity to specialise in particular areas of business.
"It equips students with the necessary knowledge, skills and self-confidence to assist their organisations in effective and successful management in a constantly changing and highly competitive national and international business environment," he said.
Majors in the Bachelor of Business Management available at UQ Ipswich include: Hospitality Management, Leisure and Recreation Management), Travel and Tourism Management.
Hospitality Management
Hospitality management is designed to provide professional management education in business that is oriented to the hospitality industry. This concentration will equip students with the comprehensive management skills necessary in the hospitality industry in the Australian and international arena. As a requirement of the program, students must complete 80 days (600 hours) of practical work in the hospitality industry.
Leisure and Recreation Management
Recreational activities and leisure pursuits play a major role in the lives of many individuals in society. A central concern of recreation professionals today is the provision of high-quality, high-impact services. The leisure and recreation management major provides students with the opportunity to develop a knowledge and understanding of professional business principles and practices suitable for application in the various elements of the leisure industry, together with the core business knowledge and skills suitable for application in a variety of recreation settings. The underlying intent is to develop, in each graduate, a greater appreciation of an entrepreneurial approach to the management of various industry-based operations. While the emphasis for studies is on the Australian setting, the skills and abilities developed through completion of the program will allow graduates to gain employment in a wide variety of situations and settings throughout the world.
Travel and Tourism Management
The travel and tourism management major provides students with an understanding of the operation and functions of the key industries that constitute this sector. Courses are designed to equip students with the ability to apply theory and principles to real life industry situations. A specialisation in tourism management is ideal for students interested in pursuing a career in either tourism or in the many sectors that support the tourism industry including finance, marketing, transport and information technology. Specialisation in travel related courses enables the student to demonstrate skills in problem identification, analysis and decision making in the travel industry. The concentration requires students to demonstrate a capacity for critical evaluation and innovation. It also enhances communication skills both within and beyond their professions. Students specialising in travel management are required to sit for the industry recognised certificates of Fares and Ticketing I and II and also have the opportunity of studying Galileo and the Banking and Settlement Plan, which are also industry recognised qualifications.
Students in any of these areas of specialisation may enhance their knowledge and skills by undertaking subjects in the rapidly developing area of Event Management. Events such as conventions, exhibitions, festivals and major sporting events play a significant role in Australian business and make a considerable contribution to Australia's economic development. Students will not only gain a broad understanding of the Event Management industry but also develop specific workplace skills.
Bachelor of Business (Communication)
The Bachelor of Business (Communication) is designed to provide students with the analytic and practical skills to manage, change and improve business communication and management practices into the 21st century. The program aims to create graduates who will be the managers of the future in the field of Communication Management.
Bachelor of Electronic Commerce
Electronic commerce is the conduct of customer-to-organisation and organisation-to-organisation business transactions via information technologies and in particular, data communication technologies. As a result of current and anticipated future growth in electronic commerce, organisations will have to make fundamental changes to their structures and processes if they are to survive in the long term.
Students completing the program will gain a broad knowledge of commerce and business-related topics, together with in-depth knowledge of those information system areas needed to acquire expertise in electronic commerce systems.
