Humanitarian aid may have gone from textbook to daily reality for East Timor-based INTERFET advisor Major David Freeman but his academic excellence will be recognised in Brisbane today, Friday, October 8.

Federal Defence Minister John Moore will receive a certificate of merit on his behalf at a special ceremony at the University of Queensland's T. C. Beirne School of Law at 10.15am hosted by University Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hay.

Major Freeman's excellent masters coursework covered some of the same issues he is now advising INTERFET Commander Peter Cosgrove on as part of his position as director of a legal cell in East Timor.

Originally from Currumbin Valley, Major Freeman advises on issues such as rules of engagement, orders for opening fire, the investigation of war crimes and humanitarian assistance.

Mr Moore will accept the Angus Edmonds Student of Merit Prize at the Law Common Room, Room 341, 3rd floor of the Forgan Smith Building.

The award is sponsored by the T.W. White Society, founded in the 1980s by a group of University Regiment members living in University colleges.

According to Society founder and former flight lieutenant Robert Johnston, the award recognises great academic achievement in medicine, engineering or law each year by a University student or graduate who is also a commissioned officer in the Australian Defence Force.

"There are hundreds of serving and reserve officers studying at the University and this award aims to encourage a more outwardly focused officer," he said.

"Major Freeman's masters degree with the University has prepared him well for his role in East Timor," Mr Johnston said.

While at the University, Mr Moore will also present a $1000 cheque to the head of the University's School of Veterinary Science and Animal Production Professor Keith Hughes.

These funds were donated by army and airforce officers who support animal welfare for injured and homeless cats and dogs that are brought to the Small Animal Clinic and Hospital by the RSPCA. The presentation of funds raised by the T.W White Society will take place at the Small Animal Clinic and Hospital, Building 82, Slip Road, at 10am.
