The University of Queensland has appointed respected Australian journalist Paul Kelly to the honorary position of Adjunct Professor of Journalism.

Mr Kelly is international editor and former editor-in-chief of The Australian newspaper.

He was previously national affairs editor for The Australian and has been a senior journalist with The Sydney Morning Herald and the National Times. He won the award of Australian Journalist of the Year in 1990. Mr Kelly has made a major contribution to intellectual discourse through his books on contemporary Australian politics. His books include The Dismissal, The Hawke Ascendancy and The End of Certainty.

The head of UQ's Journalism Department, Professor John Henningham, said staff and students welcomed Mr Kelly's participation in the life and work of the department.

"He is a fine journalist who will be a splendid mentor and model for our students, as well a stimulating colleague," Professor Henningham said.

Mr Kelly will visit the department to give lectures and seminars, and will be available to give advice to staff, undergraduates and research students.

The Journalism Department's other two adjunct professors are Michelle Grattan, chief political correspondent of The Sydney Morning Herald, and Jack Waterford, editor of The Canberra Times.
