UQ launches new business school
The University of Queensland will launch its UQ Business School at Brisbane Customs House tonight at 6pm.
Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hay said the move acknowledged something the commercial world had known and recognised for years, that UQ is a leader when it comes to tertiary business studies.
The School brings together the UQ departments of Commerce and Economics and Management with Hospitality, Tourism and Property Management, under the UQ Business School umbrella.
The School will provide a dynamic learning environment for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Head of the UQ Business School Professor Ian Zimmer said lecturers were leading academics, researchers and practising professionals, forming a mix vital to keep pace with the daily shifts in the corporate community.
"A principal feature of business and professions in the 90s is the convergence of professional pathways and educational programs to enable managers and professionals to meet the demands for integrated sources of expertise.
"The University of Queensland has responded to this demand by establishing the University of Queensland Business School The School will offer an integrated range of professional and educational programs, together with research and consultancy services/opportunities."
Professor Zimmer said the foundations of the UQ Business School were solid.
"The department of Commerce was recently ranked number one in an independent teaching survey of Australian accounting departments," he said.
"The Institute of Economic and Social Research at Melbourne University deemed the Department's honours and postgraduate research programs the best of any university in the nation. Similarly, the Department of Management is consistently ranked among the top business research and teaching departments in the country."
The University of Queensland is Australia's 1998-99 University of the Year, was recently ranked one of the top 20 universities in the Asian region, and this week was awarded the maximum five star prestige ratings by the Good Universities Guide for prestige, student demand, research performance, gender balance, staff qualifications, and positive graduate outcomes.
