University of Queensland Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hay today opened four new state-of-the-art computer teaching laboratories at the University's St Lucia campus.

The laboratories will provide an additional resource for the 10,000 UQ students undertaking study through the University's Social and Behavioural Science Faculty, according to Executive Dean Professor Linda Rosenman.

"We're taking our undergraduate teaching laboratories into the new millennium," Professor Rosenman said.

"We've spent more than half a million dollars modelling these laboratories on the high-tech system of personal work stations at UQ Ipswich, so students can make a seamless transition between campuses.

"Students undertaking a bachelor of social science degree at UQ Ipswich or St Lucia will be using the same system."

As well as computers, students will have access to printing and photocopying facilities in the new laboratory organisation. The modern, airconditioned laboratories in the Social Sciences Annexe and the Social Sciences Buildings are colour coded blue, green, yellow and orange for easy student recognition.

The project was supported by Faculty strategic initiatives funding and University of Queensland capital works funding.
