The University of Queensland will present District Court Judge Manus Boyce QC with a University Medal for Distinguished Service at a graduation ceremony on Tuesday, May 25, in Mayne Hall at St Lucia at 6pm.

Judge Boyce is the University's immediate past Warden of Convocation. He was a member of the University's Standing Committee of Convocation for 36 years, from 1963 until 1998, and he served as Warden of Convocation from 1995 until 1998. He was also a member of the Public Lectures Committee from 1965 to 1968.

During this time, Justice Boyce has worked to advance the University of Queensland's interests particularly in relation to strengthening links with graduates and safety issues for students.

Born in Townsville in 1934 and educated at Christian Brothers' College in Townsville as well as Nudgee College in Brisbane, he achieved an open scholarship to the University in 1952 where he later graduated bachelor of laws (1958) and bachelor of arts (1960).

Admitted as a solicitor in 1960 and barrister in 1967, Justice Boyce was made a Queen's Counsel in 1983 and a District Court Judge in 1988.

Graduates from the University's Business, Economics and Law Faculty will receive their degrees at the ceremony.

Guest speaker will be Justice Bruce Harvey McPherson. South African-born Justice McPherson has been Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland since 1982 and a judge of the Appeal Court of Queensland since 1991. He was Chair of the Law reform Commission of Queensland from 1982 until 1991. Justice McPherson was awarded a CBE in 1988 and has written a history of the Supreme Court of Queensland from 1859 to 1960.

Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hay will deliver the welcome address and the Student Valedictory will be given by T C Beirne School of Law graduate Derran Moss.

Graduates at the ceremony include:

o Three students from the University of Queensland-affiliated Singapore Institute of Commerce who enjoyed receiving their University of Queensland Master of Business Administration (Executive) degrees so much at the March 1999 graduations held in Singapore, they're doing it again, this time in Mayne Hall.

"We want to go through the grand convocation again as we feel that we should know more about UQ campus itself since we are now part of the family. We would also like to take this
