High Court judge, author and playwright Justice Callinan will speak on Law, culture and society at the turn of the century when he gives the 19th Archbishop Sir James Duhig memorial lecture at Mayne Hall on Wednesday, September 9 at 8.30pm.

A former director of the ABC, chairman of the Queensland TAB, trustees of the Queensland Art Gallery and the Brisbane Civic Art Gallery Trust, Justice Callinan also is the author of two plays, a novel and short stories, as well as numerous legal papers.

Since graduating bachelor of law from the University of Queensland in 1960 Justice Callinan's legal career has included cases involving high profiles such as Christopher Skase, Jane Makim and Andrew Ettingshausen.

Of his literary work, one novel, The Lawyer and the Libertine, has been published and two of his plays, Brazilian Blue and The Cellophane Ceiling, have been commercially produced in Brisbane.

The Duhig lecture series honours the late Archbishop Sir James Duhig, a former Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane and founder of St Leo's College in 1917.

Archbishop Duhig also had a long association with the University itself, helping to see it established at St Lucia and serving as a member of the University Senate for many years.

The free public lecture has been held by St Leo's College students since 1978 to commemorate Archbishop Duhig's contribution to the people of Queensland and the University.

Other prominent Australians to deliver the address, which has the theme The development of Australian culture, include Peter Garrett (1997), Graeme Richardson (1996), Reverend Peter Hollingworth (1992), Professor Geoffrey Blainey A.O. (1987) and Malcolm Fraser (1984).
