The University of Queensland and Indiana University, USA are co-organising the International Conference on Coal Seam Gas and Oil at the Sheraton Brisbane Hotel and Towers from March 23 to March 25.

More than 140 delegates are registered from Australia, Canada, USA, France, Norway, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Japan,China, Philippines, Indonesia, Tanzania and New Zealand.

Director-General of the Queensland Mines and Energy Department Dr Bob Day will open the conference on March 24 at 9am and is expected to emphasise the Government's commitment to coal seam gas development.

Conference chair Dr Sue Golding of the University of Queensland's Earth Sciences Department said that full and day registrations were available to allow interested professionals, as well as members of the public to attend technical sessions and a panel session on Energy and Environmental Economics of Coal Seam Gas.

This session on March 25 at 3.30pm will be chaired by University of Queensland Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Paul Greenfield. Panellists will also include Professor Ian Lowe (Griffith University), Professor Mike Hood (Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment) and John Rich (BHP Petroleum).

A pre-conference workshop will be held at the Sheraton on March 22 and March 23. The Texas Bureau of Economic Geology pre-conference workshop will focus on a geologic/hydrologic approach to coalbed methane exploration and development integrated in a basin scale producibility model.

A post-conference field trip departs after the final session on Wednesday 25 March, taking delegates to parts of Queensland's Surat and Bowen Basins.
