Musicians from around the world will gather to record the latest CD of music composed by University of Queensland Music Department head Associate Professor Philip Bracanin.

The one-hour CD of Dr Bracanin's chamber orchestral works will be recorded at the Sibelius Academy - named after famous Finnish composer Jean Sibelius - in Helsinki in May this year.

The 30-person Kapubandi Orchestra with a membership of some of the world's finest musicians will be joined by Hungarian soloist brothers, Tibor (cellist) and Gergely (pianist) Buganyi. Gergely recently won the coveted Liszt Competition for his playing.

Dr Bracanin is composing a piece entitled Finnish Occasional Overture especially for the new CD.

The orchestra will be conducted by Benjamin Vary, a University of Queensland graduate currently resident in Helsinki.

The performance will be recorded on a master tape and converted to CD in Australia probably by ABC Classics, who have the first option on the master tape and who produced Dr Bracanin's previous two CDs.

Dr Bracanin will take study leave to supervise the recording between May 8 and May 15 and a three-hour editing session on May 20.

Besides the Finnish Occasional Overture, the new CD will include Dr Bracanin's Concerto for Piano and Strings, Cello Concerto, Dalmatian Sojourn and Elysian Voyage. It was the 1992 composition Elysian Voyage which led to the new CD, he said.

Originally commissioned by conductor Vanco Cavdarski for the Soloists of Belgrade Chamber Orchestra, the resulting Belgrade radio broadcast failed to yield a useable tape for conversion to CD, Dr Bracanin said.

"When Ben contacted me early last year for suggestions for a concert, I recommended Elysian Voyage in the hope I could get a decent recording. I didn't but the piece was very favourably received by the audience achieving a two-minute slow clap when 90 seconds of this kind of applause is considered very good in Europe," Dr Bracanin said.

"Ben approached the director of the Sibelius Academy with the idea of specially recording a CD including the work and he agreed on two conditions - that I complete a composition with the word ?Finnish' in the title and that a photograph of us both next to a bronze statue of Sibelius appear in the liner notes of the CD!"
