5 February 1997

About 2500 parents will have the chance to preview the student life awaiting their children at the University of Queensland Parents' Day on Sunday, February 16 at the St Lucia campus.

The annual event, now in its 23rd year, is an opportunity for parents of new students to meet University staff, discuss courses and sample the first-class facilities on offer.

The students themselves will have to wait until the following Wednesday, February 19, for their orientation.

Parents' Day is designed for parents of newly-enrolled students, enabling them to find out more about the University's offerings so they are better equipped to guide and support their children through their studies.

The day will begin with an organ recital and singing of the University anthem at 9.30am in Mayne Hall, followed by an official welcome at 10am by Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hay and Student Union President Cynthia Kennedy.

After morning tea, parents will attend presentations by representatives of University faculties and departments. They will also receive information and have the opportunity to ask questions about the University's student support services.

Parents can then explore the campus facilities - including libraries, museums, bookshops, refectories and Wordsmiths Cafe- at their leisure.

University Chaplaincy Centre will also organise special Parents' Day services at 9am - Anglican Church (at St John's College, St Lucia); Catholic Church (at St Leo's College); Churches of Christ and other Protestant denominations, and Uniting Church (at Cromwell College). The University's Chaplaincy Centre at St Lucia will be open from 12noon to 3pm.
