Event Description

Full Description:
Half-day Symposium and Research Development Roundtable. The history and contemporary circumstances of the Japanese in Queensland is complex and distinctive.

This symposium will bring together a group of local and international researchers to examine the past and current trajectories of this unique part of Australia's multicultural identity.

It aims to generate discussions on the less explored aspects of Japanese diasporic experiences including informal networks, ageing, and schooling for children. It will explore various notions of diaspora, migration, transnationalism and cultural and national identity.

Some of the eight speakers will give their papers in Japanese. These presentations will be simultaneously interpreted into English by students from the School's Master of Arts in Japanese Interpreting and Translation (MAJIT) program.

Free event. All welcome. RSVP by 22 September for catering purposes to: Dr Yuriko Nagata (y.nagata@uq.edu.au).
