Talk Title: “Killers and Symbionts - Viruses and Infected Cells in the Oceans”
Abstract:
Viruses are the most abundant biological entities in the oceans and exert strong
top-down control on phytoplankton populations. However, our knowledge about
phytoplankton draws heavily from ‘healthy’ laboratory cultures. As such, we know
virtually nothing about the biology of ‘sick’, virus-infected phytoplankton. Given the
huge number of viral infections occurring across the oceans, this gap in our
knowledge is detrimental to the way we understand phytoplankton activity in marine
ecosystems. My group uses a combination of molecular tools to track the changes
induced by viral infection to phytoplankton cells -from genes to metabolisms- with
the aim to determine if, perhaps counter-intuitively, viruses provide temporarily novel
capabilities to their hosts before killing them. For instance, are infected phytoplankton
capable of using nutrients that healthy phytoplankton cannot even sense?
