Event Description

Full Description:
This event gives us the opportunity to celebrate the academic achievements of our students, the support of their families and the generosity of our donors.

Guest Speaker
Dr Iain Searle was awarded a BAgSci (Hons) in 1996 and a PhD from the University of Queensland after studying the molecular genetics of long-distance signalling of root nodule development in soybean. After completing postdoctoral research in flowering-time regulation at the Max Planck Institute in Cologne, Germany, and later on RNA silencing in the Sainsbury Laboratory and The University of Cambridge in the UK, Iain returned to Australia in 2009. His first research group was at The Australian National University, and since 2013 he has been at the University of Adelaide first as an ARC QEII Fellow and then an ARC Future Fellow. Iain was the Deputy Head of Department of Genetics and Evolution from 2016-2017 and is currently the Director of  the Australia-China Joint Research Centre of Grains for Health, a Senior lecturer and Head of the Plant Reproductive Biology Group in the School of Biological Sciences.

In his lecture, Iain will describe the tales of a teenager growing up on a sugar cane farm in small rural town in Queensland and the move to the big smoke to undertake an Agricultural Science degree at UQ while living at King’s College. He will outline the benefits of interacting with diverse undergraduate students at a residential college and the adventures during an overseas travel bursary. He will describe the excitement of discovery during his PhD research in the School and how this positively impacted his scientific career. He will then outline his time as a postdoctoral fellow in Europe and later as an academic in Australia.
