Areas of responsibility

The Deputy Provost assists in the operations of the Provost portfolio and takes forward initiatives sponsored by the Offices of the Vice Chancellor and Provost. This includes providing direction for strategic projects and working closely with senior committees and groups to drive performance agenda. The role serves as a liaison both externally and internally with other portfolios, deputizing for the Provost, as needed, at meetings, functions, appointment panels and on committees.  The Deputy Provost is the Relevant Senior Executive under the enterprise agreement for academic misconduct and performance issues and advises on policies relating to the attraction and retention of academic staff including; leading the development and implementation of university strategy to create a diverse and inclusive environment for UQ’s students and staff; advising on inclusive recruiting practices, to include training in implicit bias for search and promotion committees, and recruiting diverse personnel at all levels of leadership.

Biography

Prior to becoming Deputy Provost, Professor Pauline Ford was Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) (Acting) and previous to this, Associate Dean (Academic) in the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences. In 2016, she was appointed Head, School of Dentistry, becoming the first woman to lead a School of Dentistry in the Australia New Zealand region. Professor Ford graduated from The University of Queensland in 1989 with BDSc (Hons) (University Medal). After nine years in general dental practice, she returned to UQ and undertook a PhD before joining the academic staff in 2005 and has since completed a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education and a Masters in Public Health.  Professor Ford’s research activities focus on oral health and its role in general health and wellbeing, with an interest in the social determinants of oral health. The majority of her research work is with groups who may have difficulty accessing appropriate oral health care, such as people with mental illness and the homeless community. Her research interests are the health behaviours associated with adverse oral and general health outcomes, such as tobacco use, poor diet and infrequent engagement with health care.
