Welcome to the new year! And to finally kick it off there's some hot news about Grant Lee Buffalo's musical activities - check it out!
Grant Lee Buffalo's music is almost impossible to describe in terms of categories. Are they folk? Grunge? Alternative? Or alternative folk-tinged grunge? Who knows and what does it matter? What matters is the music itself and on this front Grant Lee Buffalo delivers. With singer/songwriter/guitarist Grant Lee Phillips' considerable songwriting prowess, on every occasion he serves up a brilliantly crafted work of musicianship. And who else in music today writes lyrics like him? Just check out Fuzzy's 'Dixie Drug Store' or 'Soft Wolf Tread' and you'll see what I mean. Vivid images bring the music to life and give it an atmosphere you couldn't cut with a knife - the best example of this is Fuzzy's 'Stars N' Stripes'. Drummer Joey Peters' relaxed style, playing with brushes, contrasts perfectly with bassist Paul Kimble's empassioned assault on his instrument (you only have to see him live to understand!). All the virtuosity in the band is thrown into a melting pot and it all contributes to the music. Grant Lee Buffalo is a band! The incorporation of other instruments such as cellos, banjos, tablas, mandolins and harmonicas (more significantly on Mighty Joe Moon) bring a flavour to the music which the hordes of Nirvana and Pearl Jam sound-a-likes lack so badly. You won't find any long, wanky guitar solos, no art-wank jams that go on for seemingly infinity, no mosh-inciting riffs, just songs of great depth and beauty. When Phillips does solo, it serves to complement the melody and extend it as opposed to simply showing off. All this is, of course, driven by the irresistable sound of an acoustic guitar. Keep an eye out for them playing at a venue near you!
