In May 1967, Australians voted overwhelmingly for two Constitutional reforms: to extend national censuses to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; and to enable the Commonwealth to pass laws for the benefit of Indigenous Australians.
To mark the 40th anniversary of the Referendum UQ declared 2007 to be a year of focus on Indigenous issues, adopting the theme 'We All Count'. This became a catalyst for a continuing, heightened attention on the myriad issues that impact on, and emanate from, Indigenous Australia.
New initiatives such as the Statement of Education Principles on Indigenous Australian Matters demonstrate how recognition of Indigenous issues can enrich the UQ community.
