How To Refer Cases

What cases can I refer to you?

The Small Animal Hospital, UQ Veterinary Medical Centre Gatton, is happy to accept referrals and second opinion cases in the following disciplines:

  • Small Animal Medicine: 
    • Drs. Carly Bloom BS DVM DACVIM (Small Animal Internal Medicine) and Sean Surman BS DVM MS (Small Animal Internal Medicine) are available for non-urgent Internal Medicine referrals on a regular basis. We can advise you of their availability.
    • Internists have expertise in
      · Upper and lower urinary tract disease
      · Endocrinology
      · Hepatobiliary disease
      · Pancreatic disease
      · Gastrointestinal disease
      · Respiratory disease
      · Infectious and immune-mediated disease
      · Haematology
    • Internists will also see
      · Neurology cases
      · Oncology cases
  • Small Animal Surgery: 
    • Dr. Bruce Smith BVSc Ms FACVSc Dip ACVS, Board-certified small animal surgeon, commences at the UQ Veterinary Medical Centre on the 20th February 2012. Specialist Surgical referrals will be available after this date. We can advise you on his availability.
  • Ophthalmology:
    • Dr. Edith Hampson BVSc PhD FACVSc (Ophthalmology) is available for non-urgent ophthalmology referrals on a regular basis. We can advise you on her availability.
  • Avian and Exotic Pet medicine:
    • Dr. Bob Doneley BVSc FACVSc (Avian Medicine) is available for specialist referrals and second opinions on birds, and has a great interest and experience in treating reptiles and small mammals.
  • Anaesthesia and Intensive Care: 
    • VMC Gatton has a team of highly qualified and experienced anaesthetists working with state of the art equipment. We strive is to provide the safest possible anaesthetic together with maximising the comfort of our patients after surgical procedures.
    • Our anaesthesia team is always willing to speak to veterinarians regarding any anaesthesia or analgesia concerns. If our anaesthesia staff are unavailable at the time of the call we will strive to return your call in a timely manner.
  • Diagnostic imaging:
    • Referrals for digital radiology, Computerised Tomography (CT) and endoscopy (rigid and flexible) can be accepted most days. Radiology and CT images are uploaded onto our PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication Systems) and can be discussed by telephone with radiologists and specialists at our Gatton and St. Lucia clinics. Ultrasound clinics are conducted regularly in Gatton by one of our radiologists – Dr Lisa Melville DipVetClinStudiesRadiology MACVR- we can advise you when Lisa is available. Dr Melville is happy to help you with interpreting any radiographs that you might need help with.
  • After-hours care:
    • Cases requiring after-hours care and monitoring can be referred. Intensive care cases can be accepted by prior arrangement only.

How do I refer a case?

  • Please call the Hospital (Phone: 54601788) during normal business hours to ascertain the availability of the veterinarian to who you would like to refer the case. Remember, not all of our specialists are available on a daily basis. You can then make an appointment yourself, or have your client call us.
  • Please download, print off and fill in the Referral form on this page and then fax this form and the patient history to the Hospital (fax: 54601780)
  • Please ensure your client has a copy of the referral letter, their history and any relevant documentation (radiographs, lab results, etc) with them for their appointment.
  • You will be contacted by our veterinarians once the patient has been seen and assessed.
