 The Project

The relocation of the School of Veterinary Science to purpose-built, high-quality facilities at The University of Queensland Gatton Campus is an exciting development for veterinary education for Queensland and for Australia and will make it the most comprehensive animal research and teaching centre in Australia.  The move will consolidate in-house teaching of a high-quality curriculum which is underpinned by state-of-the-art amenities and has access to the University's world-class research facilities (such as the Centre for Advanced Animal Science, the Institute of Molecular Biosciences, the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and the Queensland Brain Institute).  The relocated School will:

  • Unite the School on one campus in a setting more suited to the study of and research in the veterinary sciences.
  • Provide state-of-the-art teaching facilities including modern teaching laboratories, computer laboratories and student amenities.
  • Provide equine and small animal teaching clinics and hospitals staffed with specialist clinicians and equipped with the latest diagnostic tools.
  • Offer easy student access to an extensive range of animal production units including beef and dairy cattle, horses, sheep, pigs and poultry.
  • Incorporate essential facilities to strongly position the University for professional accreditation of its program by USA, UK and European authorities in addition to Australian accreditation.
  • Provide modern research facilities including well equipped laboratories and new animal houses for the conduct of animal disease, production and welfare research.
  • Foster the ability to conduct research into tropical animal disease and production that is relevant not only to Australia but to other tropical and sub-tropical countries.
  • Increase the ability to integrate activities of the School of Veterinary Science with animal teaching and research conducted within the Centre for Advanced Animal Science, the School of Animal Studies, the School of Land, Crop and Food Sciences, and the School of Natural and Rural Systems Management, which are already based at UQ Gatton.
  • Complement the existing academic facilities and the main administration buildings at UQ Gatton.

Core New Facilities

The Veterinary Science Building will provide three large veterinary science research laboratories in the areas of Clinical Pathology, Molecular Biology, Embryo and Cell Culture, plus facilities and offices for all academic staff and the majority of technical and scientific staff.

The UQ Veterinary Hospital will operate as a fully equipped and serviced equine clinic and large animal hospital in addition to a first opinion and referral teaching hospital for small animals. This modern, purpose-built, high-quality facility will be owned, managed and operated by the University and underpinned by world-class equine research and teaching. The Hospital will be equipped with modern diagnostic and surgical facilities including advanced imaging equipment - MRI, ultrasound, X-ray and scintigraphy - and a treadmill.

The existing John Mahon 2 Building will be refurbished to provide new state-of-the-art pre-clinical teaching laboratories (Anatomy, Parasitology, Pathology labs plus Histophathology and Post Mortem facilities).

The proposed purpose built Veterinary Teaching and Research Facilitiy will support teaching and research into small animals. There are no other comparable facilities in Australia.
