More than 100 serologicaly distinct types of human rhinovirus (HRV; Greek rhin = nose) exist within the genus Rhinovirus. The type strain of the genus is human rhinovirus type A (HRV-1A). Along with other members of the family Picornaviridae, the HRV are unenveloped viruses with a positive sense, single-stranded RNA genome that is preceded by a genome-linked proteoin (5' VPg) and terminated with a poly(A) tract (3'). The isometric nucleocapsids are 22-40nm in diameter.

Genera within the family include the Genus Enterovirus, Rhinovirus, Cardiovirus, Aphthovirus, Hepatovirus, Parechovirus, Erbovirus, Kobuvirus, Teschovirus.
