The School of Biological Sciences is home to a vibrant community of life scientists. The school's research spans the scales of biological organisation, from molecules and cells to organisms, populations, species and communities.
Our School has broad expertise across ecology and evolution, molecular and quantitative genetics, palaeobiology, developmental biology, behaviour, plant and animal physiology, and conservation biology. Our research programs involve a diverse array of taxa, ranging across microbes, animals and plants, including a particular focus in the areas of marine biology and entomology. Unique opportunities for biological research are provided by our proximity to a stunning array of marine and terrestrial subtropical habitats and their endemic biodiversity. A number of research programs in the School take advantage of major model-organism systems, including Drosophila, C. elegans, and Arabidopsis, and many include a strong quantitative and modelling focus.
- Genetics of animals and plants
The School plays a major role in The University of Queensland's Ecology Centre and ARC Centre of Excellence for Integrative Legume Research.
The School also participates in the activities of the following research centres:
- Centre for Marine Studies
- Cooperative Research Centre for Sugar Industry Innovation through Biotechnology (CRC SIIB)
- Cooperative Research Centre for Tropical Rainforest Ecology and Management
- Cooperative Research Centre for Coastal Zone Estuary and Waterway Management
- Centre for Biological Information Technology
The School's strong research profile is evident in our teaching, which covers most areas of plant and animal biology and spans both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We also deliver a number of internet-based remote courses through the Entomology Program. Various opportunities exist within the School for international and study abroad students to take courses and be involved with ongoing research.
The School plays a major role in The Ecology Centre and the Centre for Marine Science.
The School is situated on the St Lucia campus in Brisbane and is part of the Faculty of Science.
