     RCH Burns Research Group Projects
  Scar Wars
This project aims to discover novel proteins or genes that may be involved in scarless wound healing. Burrington in 1971 discovered that the unborn foetus has the ability to heal incisional wounds without scar formation. After birth, the ability to heal wounds without scar is lost. This project aims to identify potential foetal proteins and genes to determine if they enable a post-natal wound to heal without scar.

Fetuin
This project involves testing of a protein "Fetuin A" discovered from the Scar Wars project to determine if it is able to help a wound heal without scar.

VitroGro
This study is being conducted in conjunction with Dr Zee Upton (QUT). Dr Upton developed VitroGro and it is being trialled as a potential wound healing agent for the treatment of burn injuries.

Low Molecular Weight Silicone Cream
This study is being conducted in conjunction with Prof Graeme George and Mr Washington Sanchez(QUT). Mr Sanchez developed a low molecular weight silicone cream as part of his PhD and it is being trialled as a potential scar-reducing agent.

First Aid
This project aims to determine the optimal first aid treatment for burns, including the optimum temperature of water for cooling burns, the optimum duration of cooling and the delay after a burn at which treatment is still effective. Current guidelines concerning appropriate first aid for burns are conflicting and are based on limited and inconsistent data. This project is being conducted as part of Leila Cuttle's PhD.

Alternative Therapies for Burns
This project involves testing of various alternative therapies used for burn treatment in the wider community (eg aloe vera, vitamin E cream, tea tree oil, paw paw ointment) to determine their ability to heal burn wounds. Although these therapies are used outside the clincial arena, there is little evidence to support their use. This project is being conducted as part of Leila Cuttle's PhD.
