To investigate burn injuries and determine optimum treatment for children with burns The Royal Children's Hospital Burns Research Group or RCHBRG, is one of the leading burns research groups in Australia. The group was established with the aim of improving the treatment of children with burns, and raising public awareness of burns prevention. It is located on the University's Herston campus within the School of Medicine.
The Burns Research Group laboratory is situated next to the Stuart Pegg Paediatric Burns Centre (SPPBC) at the Royal Children's Hospital, which means that the clinical and laboratory aspects of the research are well integrated. The Royal Children's Hospital, Brisbane is the tertiary referral centre for Queensland, and treats children who have sustained burns in Queensland, northern New South Wales, Northern Territory and the regional Pacific. Approximately 550 children present annually with new burns.
The group is lead by Professor Roy Kimble who is Director of Burns at SPPBC. The group currently consists of three full time scientists, four PhD students, a Masters student, a Burns Prevention Researcher, a Burns Research Fellow and associated clinical staff.
The group has interests in many areas of burns research including development of new treatments, scar management, testing of existing treatments, and burns prevention. The Group's objective is to develop treatments which will allow burn wounds to heal rapidly, restoring normal skin structure and appearance.
