|Natural Therapeutics Research Group ||
The group studies the role of natural compounds in the treatment of diseases or as a source for new therapies.
Traditional treatments for inflammatory diseases from Australasia have been investigated and early clinical studies on mussel lipids for asthma, and an emu oil concentrate for inflammatory bowel disease have been completed. Compounds derived from the brown snake venom which can stem bleeding in surgical procedures and trauma are also under investigation. Further studies using Australian snake venoms are in progress to pursue novel therapeutic drugs to address needs to treat and manage cardiovascular, pain, arthritis, dementia disorders and surgical procedures.
Areas of Research Include:
- Researching drugs from natural sources:
- Snake venom
- New drugs from genes
- Combination therapies using natural products to reduce toxicities of anti-inflammatory drugs
- To treat arthritis, inflammation, blood loss & blood clotting
