 Profile

The Division of Mining and Minerals Process Engineering conducts research primarily in the fields of: Mining Engineering (mine planning/safety, spontaneous coal combustion, ventilation, virtual reality in mining) and Minerals Process Engineering (comminution, flotation, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallury).

The Division of Mining and Minerals Process Engineering has established an excellent reputation for the quality of its graduate training and research performance. In the years to come it is hoped that future generations will build on these foundations to achieve the highest internationally competitive standards of education, training, research and consulting in support of the minerals industry.

The Division has its own research programs as well as effective involvement in joint research projects with the Centres within the Sustainable Minerals Institute. The members of the SMI are:

  • Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre
  • W H Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre
  • Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation
  • Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre
  • Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining
  • Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry

No other University in Australia has such a comprehensive and powerful set of Divisions and Centres specifically devoted to the activities of the minerals and related industries. The Division has a long and close association with the minerals industry in teaching and research. This is reflected in the strong financial support by the industry for the research programs within the Division. We currently have an involvement in three Co-operative Research Centres:
  • Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment, which has a significant mining group based at the University Mine
  • CRC for Coal in Sustainable Development
  • AJ Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy
