 Profile

The Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) undertakes globally competitive research to decipher the information contained in the genes and proteins of plants, animals and humans. The IMB is recognised nationally and internationally as one of Australia's leading research institutes.

The IMB's exploration of the genetic basis of life will greatly impact on the health and quality of life of humans, well into the next century. It links leading edge genomic discovery and bioinformatic facilities with research to better understand human and animal biology, and to develop new pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, nanotechnologies and disease therapies.

The IMB is a highly collaborative environment where researchers from different fields combine to contribute to strategic research programs. This is underpinned by our highly developed infrastructure in informatics, genomics, chemistry, structural biology, cell and developmental biology and genetics. Consequently, IMB researchers may pursue a powerful combination of technical approaches and biological systems in order to gain insights mammalian biology.

The research focus of the Institute for Molecular Bioscience is:

  • To investigate the basis of human and mammalian growth and development, at the genetic, molecular, cellular and organ levels

  • To understand what processes go awry in various disease processes, including cancer and other complex diseases that are the major health burden of our population

  • To develop pharmaceutical and cellular therapies, technologies and diagnostics to prevent or repair such diseases

  • To pursue other opportunities for the practical applications of mammalian genetic programming and molecular architectures, including to transform and to create new industries both in biology and in information technology.

The IMB provides excellent intellectual and physical resources, a multi-disciplinary approach and effective links between research groups, government and industry. Research outcomes are protected and commercialised by the University-owned technology transfer corporation IMBcom Pty Ltd.
