The School of History, Philosophy, Religion, and Classics within the Faculty of Arts provides study opportunities central to a liberal education. Its component disciplines are among the earliest of those offered by the University, and form a core of study essential to students wishing to acquire an understanding of the historical, political, social, cultural, religious, and philosophical concepts and processes that have shaped the development of human society and civilisations. Staff and students of the School carry out an impressive research program, covering a wide range of areas within the School's component disciplines, and leading to a significant number of academic publications. Such research benefits not only the individual researchers, but also the School, leading as it does to constant improvement to the teaching and learning environment.
The School incorporates four main disciplinary areas:
- History - Australian, British and European, Asian, Pacific, the Middle East, the United States, Russia, and thematic areas.
- Philosophy - the appraisal of argument, the nature of thinking, the nature of the mind that thinks and what it thinks about.
- Studies in Religion - the role of religion in human life, in both the past and present, and study of the major world religions, both eastern and western, as well as indigenous belief systems and new religious movements.
- Classics and Ancient History - Ancient Greek and Latin, and the history of early Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mesopotamia and the Celts.
