| Globalisation has progressed at a rapid rate as a result of advances in technology, mass media and transport. Career development has expanded its sphere of influence to countries and cultures beyond its western origins. In recent years, much debate in the field of career development has focused on revisioning and repositioning itself as a relevant and sustainable discipline in this global world. This chapter considers terminology related to globalisation and intemationalisation and overviews issues and challenges facing career development in the 21st century. Some of the issues and challenges are long-standing while others are emerging in response to the process of globalisation. It is the purpose of this chapter to provide a backdrop to the remaining chapters of the book.
