 | Profile | |
Research fields include: crustal evolution and metallogeny, mantle geochemistry, igneous petrology, palaeobiology, isotope sedimentology, palæoclimatology, palæoceanography and environmental chemistry. Research in Earth Sciences in the School of Physical Sciences is conducted from four broad Fields of basic, strategic and applied research, each of which consists of one or more research areas with groups of researchers. Collaborative research is linked to other initiatives and centres at UQ and industry.
Major Research Fields
Geochemistry, geochronology and isotope systems
(Geochronology/Thermochronology, Trace Element Geochemistry, Stable Isotope Geochemistry)
Environmental and marine Earth Sciences
(Environmental Geochemistry, Surficial Processes and Landscape Evolution, Marine Geology and Geochemistry, Geobiology of Past and Present Coral Reefs, Paleoclimatology and Global Change, Geoecology and Hydrogeology, Quantitative Paleoecology and Paleobiology)
Fossil fuels, ore geology, and exploration
(Ore Geology, Fossil Fuels Geology, Exploration Geophysics, Structural Geology and Exploration)
Crustal studies and tectonics
(Petrology and Crustal Evolution, Volcanology)
Earth Sciences has 7 specialised laboratories with modern computer facilities provides advanced analytical capabilities for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, environmental chemistry, toxicology as well as medical and forensic research:
Argon Geochronology Laboratory
Exploration Geophysics Laboratory
Geochemistry Laboratory
Sample Preparation Laboratory
Stable Isotope Laboratory
Acquire - Radiogenic Isotope Laboratory
The laboratories support a wide range of research activities undertaken by academic staff, post doctoral research fellows, as well as PhD and honours students. The facility is supported by two full time research officers. Research is also supported by specialised laboratories for petrology, sedimentology, palynology, paleontology, ICP-OES and atomic absorption analysis, organic petrology, and seismic processing. Facilities are available for mineral separation and the production of thin and polished sections.
