 Profile

The Particle and System Design Centre (PSDC) is an internationally recognised Centre for fundamental and applied research in modern particle technology. The centre is focussed on particle design i.e. the development of new particulate products with specifically targeted attributes, and the design, scale up and optimisation of the processes used to make these particles.

The products of interest cover a wide range of industrial applications including pharmaceuticals, proteins and biological materials, detergents and consumer goods, food, ceramics and high value materials, fertilisers and agricultural chemicals, and minerals. The Centre has established strong informal links with industry, both within Australia and internationally through consulting, contract research, industry training courses and other collaborations. Most research students in the Centre spend part of their study at overseas university/industry laboratories. Recent PhD and Masters graduates from the centre have taken up industry and university positions world wide in organisations including Dupont, Merck & Co., Delft University, Unilever, NASA and Alcoa.

Using state of art facilities in advanced particle characterisation, and modelling and simulation, the centre conducts research into the following areas:

  • Granulation/agglomeration
  • Compaction
  • Crystallisation/Precipitation
  • Spray drying/droplet generation
  • Liquid-liquid dispersion
  • Chemical vapour deposition
  • Modelling and optimisation of particulate processes
