 Profile

The Centre of National Research on Disability and Rehabilitation Medicine (CONROD) was established for the primary purpose of advancing research into the acute treatment and rehabilitation of people injured in motor vehicle accidents or other analogous events.

CONROD was established in 1997 through a partnership between the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC), The University of Queensland (UQ), the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) and the support of the Queensland Government.

The Centre has been successful in obtaining additional funding from grantors including the NHMRC, ARC, the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation and the Physiotherapy Research Foundation.

The Centre's core research complements the MAIC objective of generating research outcomes in the area of acute treatment and rehabilitation of people injured in motor vehicle accidents or other analogous events. This focus links CONROD to other MAIC funded research initiatives relating to injury prevention and disability management, located at the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University. This combined research then incorporates all aspects of injury control from prevention through treatment, rehabilitation and disability management.

Mission

CONROD's mission is to achieve recognition at state, national and international levels as a leader in research and education on all aspects of injury management and the prevention, acute treatment, rehabilitation, social and vocational management
of disabling conditions with special emphasis on those of traumatic origin.

Objectives

To promote CONROD as a national Centre for basic and applied research into all aspects of injury management and the prevention, acute treatment, rehabilitation, social and vocational management of disabling conditions (with special emphasis on those of traumatic origin) and to act as the point of coordination and oversight of research supported through CONROD.

To provide a source of education and information concerning injury management and the prevention, acute treatment, rehabiltiation, social and vocational management of disabling conditions for health care professionals (including those in training, and in rural and remote locations) and the community more generally.

To facilitate the delivery of seamless, evidence-based health care, through a combination of research and educational Programs.

To achieve this, CONROD conducts research in the following areas:

  • Acute Trauma Care
  • Rehabilitation (Medical & Allied Health)
  • Health Economics and Health Systems
  • Social and Behavioural Science
  • Vocational and Community Rehabilitation
  • Musculoskeletal Medicine

CONROD promotes an active research environment in all of these areas for post-graduate students and professional researchers.
