 Profile

The Centre of Excellence for Integrative Legume Research (CILR) is an internationally-renowned research network of plant scientists conducting high quality, cutting-edge research into legumes and other plant species.

The CILR is a partnership of four leading Australian universities:

  • The University of Queensland
  • Australian National University
  • The University of Melbourne
  • The University of Newcastle

The Centre is based at The University of Queensland. Collaborative research projects between researchers at all four universities enhance the scale and focus of the CILR’s drive to further the development of legume genomics and phenomics.

Professor Peter Gresshoff is the Centre’s Director and The University of Queensland Node Leader. Professor Barry Rolfe is the CILR’s Deputy Director and the Australian National University Node Leader. In total, eleven Chief Investigators are leading six research programs which aim to unravel the intricate science of plant development.

The Centre has developed a novel conceptual framework of plant development that provides a platform for paradigm-shifting discoveries. The work of the centre has provided a basis for recognition of the extent of similarities between signalling in animals and plants.

The CILR provides an entrepreneurial environment with a focus on technology transfer. A dedicated business unit, Meristomics, has been established through UniQuest Pty Ltd, the commercialisation company of The University of Queensland, to commercialise the Centre’s research.
