The Discipline of General Practice (DGP) conducts research to enhance the quality of care provided by general practitioners to their patients. Expert research is conducted in an array of areas at the DGP. Expertise exist in the areas of IMETS, Evidence Based Medicine/Practice, diagnostic processes, acute respiratory infection, musculoskeletal medicine and increasing research skills and productivity in primary care.
The Discipline conducts primary research, secondary and implementation research findings into clinical practice. There are different clinical areas of research at the discipline. The DGP also conducts research in the areas of acute respiratory infection, skin cancer, musculo-skeletal, women’s health, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, palliative care, chronic disease and heart failure. Research is also conducted in clinical, prevention and best-practice (including evidence based best practice) processes.
Research conducted at the DGP plays an integral role in supporting The University of Queensland and other outside areas. The DGP has worked with NHMRC Mental Health Partnerships grant in association with the Department of Psychiatry. Other areas of contribution include working with colorectal cancer with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). The DGP has also made contributions in palliative care in conjunction with QUT and Mt Olivet Hospice services.
The Discipline of General Practice was formed in 1995 within the Department of Social and Preventative Medicine at The University of Queensland Medical School. Prior to this date it has existed under various guises.
