 Profile

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit's objective is to become a centre of excellence and expert opinion on teaching, research and consultation in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and to maintain a committed system of personal and academic support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at The University of Queensland.

The Unit is involved in many issues in the University, tertiary education, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and broader communities. Staff in the Unit assist students with academic matters and with personal matters that impact upon students' studies. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Academic and Research & Publication Groups are also responsible for developing the Unit's academic profile through research, teaching, and publishing. The Unit coordinates the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Plan, which includes courses concerned with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives on literature, history and politics.

The main objectives of the Unit are:

  • To increase recruitment, retention, academic performance and graduation rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at The University of Queensland, especially in degree programs in which there have been few or no Indigenous students.

  • To promote understanding between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and other Australians.

  • To facilitate international understanding between and about Indigenous peoples on the basis of the highest levels of scholarship in teaching and research concerning Indigenous peoples and cultures.

  • To incorporate the worldviews and intellectual traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in University academic and administrative policies, programs and procedures.

  • To nurture and assist in the expansion of the knowledge systems, worldviews and intellectual traditions of Indigenous peoples, encourage their recognition by the wider community, strive for their international recognition and secure their pivotal role in teaching and research concerning Indigenous cultures and to encourage its contribution to understanding and world knowledge.

The Unit has conducted several major research projects, including a survey of past and present Indigenous Australian students at the University and a review of Indigenous Australian content in the curriculum at the University. The Unit is also continuing a major externally-funded Aboriginal cultural heritage project with the Gooreng Gooreng Aboriginal community on Queensland's central coast.

The Unit publishes a biannual education journal, The Australian Journal of Indigenous Education, Ngulaig, an occasional monograph series, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit Research Report Series which reports results of the ongoing Unit research program. The Unit also runs the University Aboriginal Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ATAS) and administers scholarships reserved for Indigenous students.
