 Profile

Architecture is intimately bound to the history and development of culture and is a prime agent in technological, artistic and social change.

The School of Architecture at UQ is a national leader in architectural education and research. Research strengths in indigenous culture, the history and theory of architecture, and sustainable design are strongly linked into the professional degree programs, which emphasise intellectual and imaginative responses to culture and place.

The School's research units are:

  • Aboriginal Environments Research Centre (AERC)

The Centre provides a national focal point for issues of Indigenous housing, architecture and a set of related human problems pertaining to the social environments of Aboriginal communities. It operates as a research and consultancy practice, a teaching centre, and an archive.

  • Architecture Theory Criticism History Research Group (ATCH)

The ATCH research group focuses on 19th and 20th century architecture in Europe, Australia, European colonies and successor nations. It is concerned with historical and theoretical issues in architecture and demonstrates the relevance of historical and theoretical work in the practice of contemporary architecture.

  • Centre for Sustainable Design
