My PhD thesis uses the mass mediation of professional women tennis players as its text to investigate gender and indentity in same-sexed-body centred communities. My interests lie in the notions of 'authenticity' (and thereby the 'inauthentic') in popular cultures - particularly communities of women. I explore the relationships between and uses of stereotypes, disguise, gender, traditions, 'reality' and 'authenticity' and the role these play in the projection of identities.
