Atomic Force Microscopy/Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy Dr Elena Taran has completed her PhD at The Graduate School of Chemical Engineering, Kyoto University, Japan in November 2006. During the PhD she investigated the effects of pH on silica friction characteristics by means of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). She joined The School of Chemical Engineering, University of Queensland in 2007 as a post doctoral researcher to study the time effects on particle-bubble interactions and the influence of nanobubbles on friction forces by using AFM. Employing the same technique, she also studied surface chemistry aspects of coal flotation in bore water. In 2009 she joined the Queensland Node of the Australian National Fabrication Facility team (Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology) where she is in charge with the AFM and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy facilities.
