 Biography

Maree Smith is Head of the Pain Research Group in the School of Pharmacy and directs its preclinical pharmacology research program. This group undertakes research in a broad range of projects focussed on improving our understanding of the mechanistic basis of a range of pain states and their pharmacological management, with a view to improving our ability to alleviate chronic pain in patients.

Professor Smith is Head of the Pain Research Group in the School of Pharmacy and in 2005 she is the inaugural Director of TetraQ, Australia’s first integrated preclinical drug development facility. The Pain Research Group is internationally competitive in the pain field with various research projects focussed around the broad theme of Pain Medicines Research. Prof Smith also has a broad range of expertise and know-how in preclinical drug development, including animal models of human disease, bioanalytical assays and pharmacokinetics. Apart from active involvement in the commercialization of her own IP, Prof Smith has considerable experience with the undertaking of milestone-driven contract preclinical research for a range of Australian biotechnology companies. To date, she has supervised to completion 12 PhD students, 1 M Phil student, 11 postgraduate Honours students and 8 On-course Honours students. She is currently supervising 4 PhD students, 3 M Phil students and 2 On-course Hons students. In 2001 and 2002, Prof Smith was awarded a “Meritorious Mention” in recognition of sustained excellence in PhD student outcomes and in 2003 she was awarded a “Trailblazer Award” by Uniquest.
