As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Siddle has responsibility for the enhancement of the University’s research and research training profile, and development of research collaborations. Professor Siddle is an experimental psychologist with interests in the areas of orienting, attention and conditioning. His research has been supported by the Science and Engineering Research Council (UK), the Medical Research Council (UK), the Australian Research Grants Scheme, the Australian Research Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council. His work received continuous funding from 1985 to 1999. He has published two books and over 100 book chapters and journal articles and served as Editor of Biological Psychology for five years, and supervised to completion ten PhD students.
David Siddle became Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) from 2002 following his September 2001 appointment as the University's Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research). Previously he was Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Sydney 1997-2001 and Dean, Postgraduate Studies at the University of Queensland 1993-1997.
After completing his PhD, Professor Siddle spent 12 years in the U.K as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London and then as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader at the University of Southampton. He was also Visiting Professor at the University of Ottawa for a year. He returned to Australia in 1983 to work at Macquarie University, then moved to the University of Tasmania as Professor of Psychology and Head of Department. In 1991 he became Head of the Department of Psychology at the University of Queensland.
He joined the ARC in 1991 and chaired the Council's Social Sciences and Humanities Panel 1993-94. In 1994 he was Research Grants Committee deputy chair and a Planning and Review Committee member. He has also conducted national and international reviews of departments, divisions and programs and taken a leading role in the development of advanced computing in New South Wales.
As chair of the National Committee for Psychology, he initiated a strategic review of the psychology discipline. This was conducted under the auspices of the Academy of Science and the report, Psychological Science in Australia, was presented to the ARC in 1996.
Professor Siddle is a Director of the Sustainable Minerals Institute and CRCMining. He chaired the National Committee of DVCs/PVCs (Research) in 2001 and is currently convenor of the Go8 DVCs(R). He is also a member of the RQF Reference Committee.
