 Biography

Ecological processes controlling tropical forest recovery and human livelihoods, involving plant community dynamics, plant-soil interactions, nutrient cycles, agroforestry

Ilyas started to work on tropical ecology and environmental management during his participatory research and planning of natural resource management in Peruvian Amazonia in 1998. He completed his BSc and Hons in 2001 in Tropical Environmental Science (Plant & Soil Science) at the The University of Aberdeen (Scotland) in collaboration with the Institute of Fundamental Studies (Sri Lanka). During his PhD awarded in 2008 from The University of Queensland (Australia) Ilyas completed field and ex situ microcosm research in Brazil and Australia. Ilyas is currently developing his plans for postdoc research on the effects of plant community composition on the recovery of mycorrhizal fungi and ecosystem functions in secondary forests and agroforestry after agricultural disturbance.
