Senior Lecturer in International Relations Background
Before joining the staff at the University of Queensland Dr Shapcott taught at Monash, Bristol and Keele Universities (UK) and had been a lecturer in International Relations at Deakin University. He has also taught at the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies at the Australian Defence College (Canberra). He has been a visiting fellow at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, Melbourne and Latrobe University.
Research Interests
- Dr Shapcott's research interests focus on international ethics, cosmopolitan political theory and cultural diversity.
- He is the author of Justice, Community and Dialogue in International Relations (2001) which investigates the question of justice in a culturally diverse world and asks: is it possible to conceive of a universal or cosmopolitan community in which justice to difference is achieved? It employs the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer as part of a defence of cosmopolitan community.
- He is currently writing A Critical Introduction to International Ethics. This book provides a comprehensive critical analysis of the field of international ethics and argues that the themes of Harm, Humanitarianism and Hospitality dominate thinking on this subject.
- His longer term project focuses on the development of a cosmopolitan ethics based on the principle of inclusive dialogue.
