Research Interests

  • Dr Shapcott's research interests focus on international ethics, cosmopolitan political theory and cultural diversity.
  • He is the author of Justice, Community and Dialogue in International Relations (2001) which investigates the question of justice in a culturally diverse world and asks: is it possible to conceive of a universal or cosmopolitan community in which justice to difference is achieved? It employs the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer as part of a defence of cosmopolitan community.
  • He is currently writing A Critical Introduction to International Ethics. This book provides a comprehensive critical analysis of the field of international ethics and argues that the themes of Harm, Humanitarianism and Hospitality dominate thinking on this subject.
  • His longer term project focuses on the development of a cosmopolitan ethics based on the principle of inclusive dialogue.
