 Biography

Dr Rosemary Roberts’ research interests include modern and contemporary Chinese literature and society, particularly relating to Maoist culture, women’s studies and gender studies.

Dr Roberts worked for several years in Beijing, China as a translator and editor of books on Chinese culture and society. She obtained her Ph D from the Australian National University in 1992 with a dissertation on three generations of women writers in ‘reform period’ China (1978-1989). Her subsequent research focussed on women’s fiction and women’s studies, with articles and book chapters on women writers Zhang Jie and Zhang Xinxin, feminist literary criticism in contemporary China, and women’s fiction on abortion. She also edited two isssues of the ME Sharpe Chinese Sociology and Anthropology series on Women and Employment in Reform Period China. Her most recent project is a study of gender in public culture in Maoist China. She has published a series of articles on gender in the model works (yangbanxi) of the Cultural Revolution, and is currently writing a book. She has recently also co-edited a special issue of Asian Studies Review on ambiguities of gender and genre in Asian cultures. Her research articles have appeared in journals including The China Quarterly, The Australian Journal of Chinese Affairs (The China Journal), Asian Theatre Journal and Asian Studies Review.

• public lectures on Chinese art and Chinese women
• Running in-service training workshop for secondary teachers of Chinese
• Former member of LOTE advisory committee of Board of Senior Secondary School Studies
• Also involved with various activities for secondary school students of Chinese including Taste of Chinese and the Chinese Writing Competition
