Gillian took up the position of Curator Public Programs for The University of Queensland Art Museum in July 2008. She was previously inaugural Lecturer in Museum Studies in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History, Faculty of Arts, from June 2005 to June 2008. As Program Co-Convenor, and then as Convenor of Museum Studies, she managed the development and implementation of the new postgraduate program of six core courses and twelve inter-departmnetal and cross-faculty multidisciplined electives. Gillian developed and taught the core postgraduate courses of Collections, Exhibiting Culture, Museum Management and Case Study for the Museum Studies program.
Prior to her appointment as Lecturer, she was Senior Administrator for the Faculty of Arts from June 2004 – June 2005, working on research, analysis and industry consultation for the proposed Museum Studies curriculum, and Senior Research Officer for the School of Tourism, Faculty of Business, Economics and Law working on the development of the Visitor Research Unit.
In her capacity as a consultant she has contributed to cultural policy research, development and evaluation, on a range of projects for government, universities, and cultural institutions. Recent consulting projects include reviewing the findings of the Federal Government Inquiry into Australia’s Indigenous Visual Arts and Craft Sector and contributing to the development of the Art+Place policy framework and guidelines for Arts Queensland.
Gillian brings over twenty five years professional experience in the museum and gallery sector to her research and teaching at UQ. She has local, national and international experience as a museum director, curator and conservator and has worked across the fields of visual arts, public art, craft and design, performing arts and social history. This national experience encompasses museums and art museums in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne, including the National Gallery of Victoria (1983-88), and international research internships at the Metropolitan Museum, New York; Textile Conservation Centre, London; Musee des Tissus, Lyon, France; and the Abegg Stiftung, Berne, Switzerland.
Her research interests include enlightenment museums; history of exhibiting practice; theories of museum space and audience engagement.
