Dr Mia O'Brien is a lecturer and educational researcher with experience in school and university settings. Mia's research areas include pedagogical content knowledge and reasoning, teacher knowledge and professional learning, the development of teaching practice and identity, and inquiry-oriented pedagogies that promote transformative learning.

Her current research activities employ a participatory action research design. This enables collaboration with like-minded teacher-researchers in the investigation of the interrelationships of subject matter, student learning and teacher knowledge. Set in both school and university settings – these studies draw on a sociocultural theory of learning and teaching to inform an analysis of pedagogical thinking and practice, teacher learning, and the enhancement of student learning.

Mia's research is currently funded by an UQ Early Career Research Grant, an UQ Strategic T&L Grant, and an ALTC (Australian Learning & Teaching Council) Competitive Grant.
