Dr Paula Myatt's research has a focus on enhancing student learning through authentic experiences that relate to the student's real world or to the professional world they wish to enter. Paula’s research focuses on authentic student learning experiences through undergraduate research, inquiry, internships and service learning experiences within higher education.
Paula works within the Higher Education Research and Scholarship (HERS) team at TEDI and brings to that team a unique combination of education and science expertise, with dual qualifications in both fields. Paula trained as a microbiologist and journalist at The University of Queensland, completed a PhD and moved into science education.
Since 2001 Paula has worked on many science education projects including the award winning Advanced Study Program in Science (ASP) within the Faculty of Science at UQ. She currently works as a Senior Lecturer in Higher Education and is involved in a range of teaching and learning projects focusing on undergraduate research. Paula has taught several short courses on "Research-based Learning" and also coordinates new academic staff induction at UQ.
Her major research themes include:
1 The Undergraduate Research Experience as a specific example of authentic student learning – the vital role of context and authenticity of experience in building knowledge and understanding in undergraduate student learning experiences.
2 Narrative Inquiry – the role of student and staff stories in understanding experiences.
3 Induction of Academic Staff – with a focus on the experiences of new international staff and their experiences of arrival and transition within a large, research-intensive university.
