 Biography

Dr Paula Myatt's research has a focus on enhancing student learning through authentic experiences that relate to the student's real world or to the professional world they wish to enter.

Paula’s research focuses on undergraduate student learning, experiential/authentic learning and induction processes within higher education.

Paula works within the Higher Education Research and Scholarship (HERS) team at TEDI and brings to that team a unique combination of education and science expertise, with dual qualifications in both fields. Paula trained as a microbiologist and journalist at The University of Queensland, completed a PhD and moved into science education.

Since 2001 Paula has worked on many science education projects including the award winning Advanced Study Program in Science (ASP) within the Faculty of Biological and Chemical Sciences at UQ. She currently works as a Senior Lecturer in Higher Education whilst maintaining strong links to the teaching of undergraduate science through her research and collaborations.

Her major research themes include:

1 The Undergraduate Research Experience as a specific example of authentic student learning – the vital role of context and authenticity of experience in building knowledge and understanding in undergraduate student learning experiences.

2 Sessional Academic Staff Experiences – with a specific focus on induction, training in teaching and learning, and support of Sessional staff within the institution.

3 Induction of Academic Staff – with a focus on the similarities to ‘the first year experience’ in undergraduate education – where new academics bring different experiences and understandings to their new role but how well does the institution portray its expectations and support new staff?
