| Meteorological Controls on Wind Erosion |
| | As part of an international collaboration, we are investigating the physical controls on wind erosion in the degraded tussock grasslands of the South Island, New Zealand. The effectiveness of different plant species to control wind erosion is being assessed through a comprehensive multiyear field measurement program. Results from the study will be used to develop new land management strategies to conserve soil in this region and to rehabilitate severely degraded landscapes. |

| Local and Regional Scale Wind Systems |
| | An ongoing research program is investigating the influence of different surface properties on the thermodynamic characteristics of the atmospheric boundary layer particularly as they relate to local and regional wind field develop. Objectives of this research are to improve knowledge of air pollution dispersion in coastal and mountainous terrain, to identify new areas for agricultural development and to shed light on wildfire behaviour. |

| Palaeoclimate Reconstruction in the Dry Valleys, Antarctica |
| | In collaboration with New Zealand based colleagues a new research initiative has been developed to use permafrosted aeolian landforms in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica to reconstruct the regions seasonal wind regime. Variability in the frequency and intensity of valley winds and katabatic airflow will be investigated for linkages to changing synoptic circulation patterns and climate variability. |
