 Biography

Professor Ian Lilley’s research interests focus on the archaeology of Aboriginal Australia, Torres Strait and the Indo-Pacific.

Ian Lilley (BA Hons, MA Qld, PhD ANU) is Professor of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (ATSIS). He is a professional archaeologist and has undertaken archaeological and cultural heritage research throughout mainland Australia and the Pacific Islands. He did his PhD studies in PNG, investigating ancient maritime trading systems. His research projects currently focus on archaeological developments in the Gulf of Carpentaria and New Caledonia. He also manages other projects concerning Indigenous heritage and issues in higher education of concern to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. He is a member of Australia ICOMOS, an ICOMOS World Heritage Assessor and Secretary-General of the ICOMOS International Committee on Archaeological Heritage Management. ICOMOS is the statutory advisory body to UNESCO concerning cultural heritage. He is also Secretary-General of the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association, the region's peak professional archaeological body, as well as Convenor of a UQ/Oxford initiative, the International Heritage Group. His other professional interests are archaeology and social identity, archaeological ethics, and the role of archaeology in contemporary society.

Ian oversees the ATSIS Unit's teaching, research, consultancy and publication programs. In particular, he co-ordinates several undergraduate research courses, and supervises postgraduate students from many different schools in the university. He also undertakes Indigenous student support and helps organise and deliver Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies courses for the international market.
