Substance abuse among adolescents is a critical public health concern. As stakeholders in adolescent health, we need to develop nimble and innovative ways of stemming substance misuse, abuse, and related harm. Dr Kelly has a keen interest in working with stakeholders to better understand how and why substance abuse develops, and how we might best detect, prevent, and treat substance abuse among young people. Since completing his PhD (UQ) in 1999, Dr Kelly has had a strong publication record in the area of youth substance abuse. Dr Kelly has published in journals that have the highest impact factors in this area. These include Addiction, Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, Nicotine and Tobacco Research, Alcohol and Alcoholism, and Addictive Behaviors. He has also published research in high quality generalist journals, including Preventive Medicine, Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, and the European Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. Many of his papers have been widely cited in the academic literature.
Dr Kelly has been invited to present his research at several prestigious international institutions, including the University of New Mexico, Edinburgh Hospital, and the University of Washington. He is an ARC INTREADER, a regular project reviewer for the NHMRC, and has served as an NHMRC Group Assessor. Dr. Kelly has received approximately $1.6 million in largely first or sole authored nationally competitive research grants, including an ARC Discovery Project, NHMRC Projects, NDLERFC funding, and NHMRC fellowship funding (Career Development Award). He was recently awarded a large NHMRC project grant to investigate the extent to which a brief parent-focused program alters risky trajectories of alcohol consumption that commonly emerge during adolescence.
He is a regular reviewer of papers submitted to many national and international journals. He recently served on the Academic Programs Committee of the Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA) Annual Convention (Washington DC), and he is a member of the Editorial Board of Addictive Behaviors (ranked 5/18 in substance abuse). Dr Kelly is a registered psychologist, a member of the Australian Psychological Society, and the APS clinical college. Dr Kelly has worked closely with a range of community organisations to improve the timing and content of interventions delivered in schools, and to families concerned about the risks faced by their adolescent.
